IELTS speaking part 2 introduction: Cue Card

IELTS speaking part 2 introduction

The most challenging segment of the IELTS Speaking test is likely Section 2, where sustaining a continuous 2-minute monologue is required. This is a skill seldom practiced, even in one’s native language, let alone a foreign one. However, mastering this is not as daunting as it may seem. The key lies in effectively crafting an outline during the one-minute planning period before commencing your speech, irrespective of the topic provided.

What is the procedure for part 2?

In the IELTS Speaking Part 2, you are furnished with a topic card, a pen, and paper for note-taking, along with a minute to prepare your discourse. The topic card typically includes 3 or 4 bullet points as a guide, although adherence to all of them is optional, it is better to cover them for better clarification. This cue card format remains consistent, although the topics may vary.

The duration of IELTS Speaking Part 2 spans 3 to 4 minutes, including the examiner’s instructions. During this time, you have one minute for preparation and 1 to 2 minutes to discuss the topic. While utilizing the entire minute for preparation is not obligatory, I recommend doing so for thorough readiness. Speaking for at least 1 minute and 30 seconds is advisable; however, going beyond that may lead to a brief follow-up question from the examiner.

Notepaper and a pencil are provided for making notes, and you can retain both the task card and your notes throughout your presentation, returning them only after completing Part 2.

Effectively utilizing the one-minute preparation time involves promptly grasping your idea and spending the remaining 45 seconds on structuring your discourse. Briefly covering 2 or 3 key points aids in focusing on language expression during the talk.

How to cover this part perfectly?

Confidence is paramount in Part 2. Keep the Cue Card or Task Card in view and remember that referencing your notes during the speech is permissible. Write down the keywords for each part, that is how you can get the general idea by a short look at your notes.

How to prepare yourself for this section?

To prepare for Part 2, familiarize yourself with the Band Descriptors used by examiners for evaluation. Regularly practice speaking English, answer Part 2 questions with a stopwatch, and seek feedback from a teacher or speaking partner to improve fluency and coherence while avoiding common mistakes.

In Part 2, refrain from memorizing the entire 2-minute response, attempting expressions beyond your proficiency level, squandering the 1-minute preparation time, rushing the speech, and returning the task card prematurely; instead, use it to structure your talk effectively.

If you’re aiming for a Band 6.5 and above in your IELTS Speaking exam, these are the sorts of things you need to be able to do with language. The more you practice, the better you will get.

It is little things like this that will gain you the marks needed to get a high band score. Just think about the language you’re using and show the examiner how flexibly you can use it.
