The five-move reading routine
Every question type changes the task, but the evidence process underneath stays remarkably consistent.
Three traps to refuse
These are not shortcuts to the answers. They are quality-control checks you should carry into every Reading task.
A distractor can repeat several words from the passage while changing who did something, why it happened, or how certain the writer is.
Some, many, usually, may and all are not interchangeable. One small change can reverse a T/F/NG decision.
If the topic is discussed but the statement itself is neither confirmed nor contradicted, the answer may be NOT GIVEN.
If the task says ONE WORD ONLY, a correct two-word idea still loses the mark. Spelling and grammatical fit matter too.

Rooftops that work harder
A Green roofs are often promoted as a simple way to make dense cities more resilient. A typical system places a layer of vegetation above a waterproof membrane, with growing material and drainage beneath the plants. Their popularity has grown partly because one surface can perform several jobs: it can soften the visual effect of concrete, provide small areas of habitat and alter how a building exchanges heat and water with its surroundings.
B During warm weather, part of the cooling effect comes from shading, but plants also return water to the atmosphere. This process, combined with evaporation from the growing medium, uses heat that would otherwise contribute to higher surface temperatures. The effect is not constant. A roof that has dried out during a long rainless period may provide much less evaporative cooling unless it is irrigated.
C Green roofs also retain some rainfall and delay the rest before it reaches street drains. That can reduce the sharp peak in runoff during a storm. Yet the amount retained varies with the depth of the growing medium, plant choice and how wet the roof already is. For this reason, engineers increasingly test performance across sequences of storms rather than quoting one storage figure as though it applied in every condition.
D Cost comparisons require similar caution. Vegetated roofs can protect waterproof layers from ultraviolet light and large temperature swings, potentially extending their useful life. On the other hand, some existing buildings need structural reinforcement before they can carry additional weight. Installation cost alone therefore tells neither the whole financial story nor whether a particular building is a suitable candidate.

Reconstructing the sounds of the past
A Archaeologists have long studied objects that were meant to be seen, held or worn, but sound leaves a more awkward record. A flute can survive; the music played on it usually does not. Even when an instrument is preserved, its present condition may differ from its working state. Wood shrinks, leather disappears and repairs carried out centuries later can alter the dimensions that once shaped its sound.
B Experimental archaeologist Dr Maya Rios therefore argues that playable replicas should be treated as hypotheses rather than replacements for ancient objects. Her team uses scans to reproduce internal dimensions while testing several plausible materials for missing parts. If two reconstructions produce different tones, that disagreement is informative: it exposes an assumption that would remain hidden if researchers built only one version and presented its sound as definitive.
C Music historian Professor Elliot Crane is more cautious about what listeners infer from such experiments. Modern players bring habits learned from present-day musical systems, including expectations about scales, rhythm and what counts as a pleasing tone. Crane does not reject reconstruction; he argues that the performance itself adds another layer of interpretation. A convincing recording may therefore create more certainty in an audience than the archaeological evidence warrants.
D The physical setting introduces another uncertainty. Researchers sometimes play replica instruments inside caves, stone chambers or reconstructed buildings to study reverberation. Yet an ancient room may have contained people, textiles, wooden partitions or stored goods that absorbed sound. Emptying the space for modern testing can make an echo seem stronger than it would have been during ordinary use. Acoustic measurement is valuable, but the measured room is not automatically the historical room.

When forecasts become part of the system
A Forecasts are usually judged by whether they describe the future accurately. That seems straightforward when the forecast concerns tomorrow's rainfall: the prediction does not normally alter the weather. In social systems, however, publishing a forecast can change the behaviour that produces the outcome. A warning of severe congestion may persuade enough commuters to travel later that the predicted traffic jam barely appears. Calling the forecast “wrong” then overlooks the possibility that its public failure was evidence of practical success.
B The reverse can occur as well. If consumers are repeatedly told that a particular product will soon become scarce, some may buy earlier or in larger quantities. The resulting surge in demand can help create the shortage that was predicted. This does not mean that every public forecast is self-fulfilling. Behavioural responses depend on whether people receive the message, trust it, have alternatives and believe that others will react too.
C These feedback effects complicate evaluation. Suppose two agencies issue identical flood warnings, but only one community has evacuation routes, flexible employers and transport for residents without cars. The same message may trigger very different behaviour. If researchers assess the warning only by comparing the predicted hazard with the eventual number of people exposed, they risk attributing to forecasting quality what actually resulted from differences in the ability to respond.
D Some analysts therefore distinguish predictive accuracy from decision value. A forecast can be numerically impressive yet arrive too late to guide action; a less precise warning can be more useful if it crosses a decision threshold early enough. The relevant threshold is not universal. Emergency managers, farmers and electricity-grid operators face different costs when they act unnecessarily and when they fail to act. A useful forecast must be interpreted within those asymmetric consequences.
E None of this removes the need for accuracy. Rather, it challenges the idea that accuracy alone is a sufficient measure of performance whenever forecasts interact with human decisions. Evaluation may need to ask two questions: how well did the forecast represent the underlying risk, and what happened because the forecast entered the information environment? Keeping those questions separate prevents behavioural success or failure from being mistaken for meteorological or statistical skill.
