TEF Canada FAQ
Find clear answers about the TEF Canada exam, score requirements, preparation time, course access, speaking mock tests, writing corrections, and Ross French Academy packages.
TEF Canada is an official French-language proficiency test created by Le français des affaires of the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce. It is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for immigration and citizenship programs that require approved French-language results.
TEF Canada measures your current French ability. It is not a course, diploma, or simple pass-or-fail examination.
For Canadian immigration, TEF Canada evaluates four language skills:
The active testing time is approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes. Reading, listening, and writing are computer-based. Speaking is completed face-to-face with an examiner. All required tests must be taken on the same day for the certificate to be recognized by Canadian authorities.
There is no single passing score for every Canadian immigration program. The required level depends on the immigration pathway and how your French results are being used.
Many Express Entry candidates aim for CLB/NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills. However, some programs may require a different level. Always confirm the current requirements for your specific program directly with IRCC before booking your test.
TEF Canada can be challenging because you must perform under strict time limits across four different skills. The difficulty depends on your current French level, target score, weakest skill, study time, and familiarity with the exam format.
There is no honest preparation timeline that works for everyone. A learner who already has an A2 or B1 foundation may begin exam-focused preparation sooner. A complete beginner normally needs additional time to build general French before focusing on TEF strategies.
The best starting point is to test all four skills, identify the weakest area, and build a study plan around that result.
Official TEF guidance states that results are normally sent by email within approximately two weeks. Processing time may vary depending on the test session and administration.
Your TEF Canada results certificate is valid for two years from its issue date. For Express Entry, your results must still be less than two years old when you create your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.
Yes. You can take TEF Canada as many times as needed. The official rule requires a minimum waiting period of 20 days between two successive tests.
For Canadian recognition, plan to complete all required tests together on the same day. Do not assume that scores from separate test dates can be combined.
TEF Canada does not have one fixed worldwide registration fee. Each authorized test centre sets its own price, so the cost may vary by country, city, centre, and test session.
You must register directly with an official TEF Canada test centre. Ross French Academy provides preparation services but does not register candidates for the official exam or set exam fees.
Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada are accepted by IRCC, but their task formats are different. Neither test is officially classified as easier.
The better choice depends on your strengths, test experience, and comfort with each format. Avoid choosing only because someone claims that one test always gives faster results or is easier for every candidate. Ross French Academy’s courses on this page are designed specifically for TEF Canada.
Our courses are designed for learners who want structured, exam-focused TEF Canada preparation. We recommend having at least a basic French foundation, approximately A2 or higher, before beginning intensive exam preparation.
If you are a complete beginner, you may first need to build essential grammar, vocabulary, listening, and sentence-building skills. The courses teach TEF strategies and provide practice, but they are not a complete zero-to-fluency French program.
The complete preparation path includes five online, self-paced courses:
The courses include structured video lessons, exam strategies, examples, PDF exercises, practice materials, and focused learning resources. Important materials are available through the Exercise tab below relevant lessons.
Ross French Academy courses combine instructor-led video lessons, guided practice, interactive activities, quizzes, downloadable resources, exam strategies, and structured skill development.
Some preparation programs provide only recorded videos or automatically generated exercises. Our courses are designed as complete learning paths that help you understand the exam, practise each skill, identify mistakes, and apply the correct strategy.
Personalized feedback is also included in selected services and preparation packages.
Choose based on how much feedback and guidance you need:
If you are unsure, think about your main problem: do you only need structured material, do you need expert feedback, or do you need regular private guidance?
All three preparation packages include 14 months of online course access. Payment is made once, and there is no monthly subscription.
Bronze access is normally activated automatically after a successful purchase. Because Silver and V.I.P include personalized services, our team will contact you to arrange the initial consultation and activate the included courses and services.
After purchase, you receive a topic-selection pack. You choose exactly one Section A task and one Section B task, complete both under the recommended exam conditions, and submit them according to the provided instructions.
Within approximately 48–72 hours, you receive a personalized report covering grammar, vocabulary, structure, task response, coherence, strengths, recurring weaknesses, and practical next steps.
This is an educational feedback service. It does not issue an official TEF Canada score, certificate, or immigration result.
After purchase, you receive instructions to arrange an available online appointment. During the session, you complete a realistic speaking simulation based on the TEF Canada Expression Orale format, including Sections A and B.
You then receive personalized feedback on communication, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, task performance, and the most important areas to improve before your official exam.
The mock test is a preparation service and is not an official TEF Canada examination.
No preparation provider can honestly guarantee a specific TEF Canada result. Your outcome depends on your starting level, study consistency, preparation time, ability across all four skills, and performance on exam day.
Ross French Academy provides structured preparation, skill-focused practice, and personalized feedback where included. We are an independent educational provider and are not affiliated with IRCC, CCI Paris Île-de-France, Le français des affaires, or official TEF Canada test centres.
