How Is the IELTS Band Score Calculated?
IELTS gives a band score from 0 to 9 for each skill. Your overall IELTS band score is the average of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
Overall IELTS Band Score
Your overall IELTS score is calculated by averaging your four skill scores. For example, if your scores are Listening 7.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, and Speaking 7.5, your average is 7.0, so your overall band score is 7.0.
IELTS Listening Band Score
IELTS Listening has 40 questions. Each correct answer gives one mark. Your raw score out of 40 is converted into a band score from 0 to 9.
IELTS Reading Band Score
IELTS Reading also has 40 questions. Academic Reading and General Training Reading use different conversion tables because the reading texts are different.
Writing and Speaking Scores
IELTS Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners using official scoring criteria. That is why expert feedback is important if you want to understand why your score is not improving.
A calculator cannot score your IELTS Writing or Speaking accurately.
Listening and Reading can be estimated from correct answers. But Writing and Speaking need expert feedback because they are scored using IELTS criteria such as fluency, grammar, vocabulary, coherence, and task response.
What Should You Do After Calculating Your Score?
Your estimated score can help you understand your current level, but improvement comes from knowing which skill is holding your band score back.
