Stuck at IELTS Band 5.5–6.5? Use Complex Structures to Reach Band 7 Grammar

IELTS BAND 7 GRAMMAR

You probably do not need more grammar rules. You need better control of the grammar you already know.

If your IELTS grammar performance seems stuck around Band 5.5 or 6.5, forcing longer sentences can actually create more mistakes. To move toward Band 7 in Grammatical Range and Accuracy, you need a wider range of structures that you can use accurately and naturally.

The Band 7 shift: stop trying to sound advanced. Start showing that you can express contrast, reason, condition, comparison and detail with structures you can actually control.

THE REAL PROBLEM

Why can your grammar stay at 5.5–6.5?

Most candidates fall into one of two patterns.

COMMON 5.5–6.5 PATTERN
Too safe or too risky

You repeat short, safe sentence patterns—or you attempt complex sentences that produce frequent errors.

BAND 7 DIRECTION
More range + stronger control

You use different structures to express clear relationships between ideas without regularly losing accuracy.

What IELTS assesses: Grammatical Range and Accuracy is assessed in both Writing and Speaking. Complex structures help demonstrate range, but accuracy still matters.

THE BAND 7 SHIFT

Four things matter more than sentence length

1 · RangeUse more than one sentence pattern.
2 · AccuracyReduce repeated grammar errors.
3 · PurposeChoose grammar for meaning.
4 · FlexibilityAvoid memorised “Band 9” sentences.

ROSS GRAMMAR RULE
Accuracy first. Complexity second.

FIRST MISCONCEPTION

A complex sentence is not simply a long sentence

A sentence becomes complex because of the relationship between its clauses—not because it contains a lot of words.

SimplePublic transport reduces traffic congestion.
Controlled complex sentenceAlthough public transport can be expensive to develop, it can reduce traffic congestion in large cities.

The second sentence is stronger because it expresses concession + main argument clearly—not because it is longer.

BUILD CONTROLLED RANGE

5 complex structures worth controlling for IELTS

You do not need dozens of advanced patterns. Start with structures that help you express relationships you constantly need in Writing and Speaking.

1

Contrast and concession

although · even though · while · whereas
BasicOnline learning is convenient. It has some disadvantages.
BetterAlthough online learning is convenient, it can reduce face-to-face interaction between students.

2

Relative clauses

who · which · that · where
BasicMany employees work remotely. These employees save commuting time.
BetterEmployees who work remotely can save a considerable amount of commuting time.

3

Conditional structures

if · unless · provided that
BasicGovernments improve transport. Fewer people may use cars.
BetterIf governments improve public transport, more commuters may choose to leave their cars at home.

4

Reason and purpose clauses

because · since · so that
BasicSome employees prefer working from home. It saves time.
BetterSome employees prefer working from home because they no longer spend hours commuting.

5

Passive forms, modals and complex noun phrases

Grammatical range is broader than subordinate clauses alone.

PassiveMore funding should be allocated to preventive healthcare.
ModalFlexible working arrangements may help companies retain experienced employees.
Noun phraseThe rapid expansion of affordable online education has changed how adults develop professional skills.

AVOID THE TRAP

Complex grammar can lower your score when you lose control

A structure is not useful simply because it looks advanced. If it creates frequent errors, simplify it and rebuild it gradually.

1. Although + but

✕ Although public transport is cheaper, but many people prefer cars.
✓ Although public transport is cheaper, many people prefer cars.
2. Despite + full clause

✕ Despite many people work from home, traffic remains heavy.
✓ Although many people work from home, traffic remains heavy.
3. Sentence fragments

✕ Because university tuition is expensive.
✓ Some students work part-time because university tuition is expensive.
4. Too many clauses

If a sentence becomes difficult to control, finish the idea and start a new sentence. Complexity should never destroy clarity.

IELTS WRITING EXAMPLE

The ideas can stay simple while the grammar becomes stronger

Compare the same basic ideas expressed with different levels of grammatical range.

Limited range

Working from home is popular. It is convenient. Workers do not travel to work. They save time. Some workers feel isolated. They do not see their colleagues.

More controlled range

Working from home has become increasingly popular because employees can avoid long daily commutes. Although this arrangement can save considerable time, it may also reduce face-to-face interaction with colleagues. Companies that combine remote and office-based work may therefore offer flexibility without completely removing workplace interaction.

Notice the difference: the stronger paragraph uses reason, concession and a relative clause. It is not simply longer.

IELTS SPEAKING

Band 7 grammar should still sound natural when you speak

Speaking also assesses grammatical range and accuracy, but you are not writing an essay aloud.

Do you think working from home is a good idea?
Natural complex grammar

I think it depends on the job. Although working from home can be really convenient, especially if you have a long commute, some people find it difficult to concentrate. Personally, if I had the choice, I’d probably work from home two or three days a week and spend the rest of the time in the office.

HOW TO IMPROVE

Stop collecting grammar rules. Start controlling them.

1. Write the idea simplyMake sure the meaning is clear first.
2. Identify the relationshipReason, contrast, condition or detail?
3. Add one structureDo not add unnecessary ideas at the same time.
4. Check controlReview verbs, agreement, articles and punctuation.

FINAL PRINCIPLE
Do not try to sound Band 7.
Build grammar you can control at Band 7.

B. Students who study online often need considerable self-discipline.

IELTS Band 7 Grammar FAQ

Can complex structures alone take me from IELTS 6.5 to 7?

No. Grammar is only one assessment criterion. Complex structures can strengthen Grammatical Range and Accuracy, but the other assessment criteria still matter.

How many complex sentences should I use in IELTS Writing?

There is no useful fixed number. Use a natural range of structures whenever they help you communicate your ideas accurately.

Can I use simple sentences and still get Band 7 grammar?

Yes. Strong responses use both simple and complex sentence forms appropriately. Range does not mean making every sentence complex.

Should I memorise advanced Band 9 sentence templates?

Flexible grammar patterns are more useful than memorising complete sentences that may not fit a new topic naturally.
