Stuck at Band 6.5 Vocabulary? Fix Your Collocations

IELTS COLLOCATIONS · LEXICAL RESOURCE

You may not need more “advanced” words. You may need better word combinations.

If your IELTS vocabulary seems stuck around Band 6 or 6.5, memorising another list of difficult words may not fix the problem. A major part of stronger Lexical Resource is using words accurately, appropriately and naturally—including the way words combine.

The Ross vocabulary rule:
stop collecting isolated words. Start learning the complete phrase you can actually use in Writing and Speaking.

WHY 6–6.5 CAN FEEL STUCK

Vocabulary size is only part of the score

Knowing many words is useful, but the examiner also needs to see that you can choose the right word for the context and combine it naturally.

COMMON BAND 6 PATTERN

Enough vocabulary, but limited precision

You can discuss the topic, but word choice may be repetitive, occasionally inappropriate or translated too directly from your first language.

BAND 7 DIRECTION

More flexibility + better precision

You can vary your wording, paraphrase when needed and show awareness of style and collocation—even though some mistakes may still occur.

What IELTS actually assesses:
Band 7 Lexical Resource in both Writing and Speaking includes awareness of style and collocation. Collocations matter, but they are only one part of Lexical Resource alongside range, precision, appropriacy, paraphrasing and accuracy.

THE SIMPLE DEFINITION

A collocation is a word partnership that sounds natural together

English allows many grammatically possible combinations, but proficient speakers repeatedly choose certain words together. Those natural combinations are collocations.

UNNATURAL

do a decision
strong rain
make attention to

NATURAL

make a decision
heavy rain
pay attention to

The grammar can be correct while the combination still sounds wrong. That is why collocation errors are easy to miss when you only check grammar.

Learn the phrase, not the word.

BUILD ACTIVE VOCABULARY

5 collocation families worth controlling for IELTS

Do not treat this as another vocabulary list. Learn each phrase with a meaning and an example sentence so you can retrieve it under exam pressure.

THE FANCY-WORD TRAP

A rare word used badly is not better than a common phrase used precisely

Trying to sound advanced can create unnatural combinations. Strong Lexical Resource is about control—not decoration.

FORCED / UNNATURAL

Governments should make a strong attention to this problem.

NATURAL / PRECISE

Governments should pay greater attention to this issue.

VAGUE

Traffic is a big problem in cities.

MORE PRECISE

Traffic congestion is a major issue in many large cities.

IELTS WRITING

See how collocations improve the same idea

The argument does not need to become more complicated. The wording becomes more natural and precise.

LIMITED / REPETITIVE

Technology is very important in education. It has a big effect on students. It can help them get more information and learn many useful things.

MORE CONTROLLED

Technology now plays a significant role in education. Greater access to information can help students develop practical skills and become more independent learners.

What changed?
The second version uses natural combinations such as “plays a significant role”, “access to information” and “develop practical skills”. The ideas remain clear and controlled.

IELTS SPEAKING

In Speaking, collocations should sound natural—not rehearsed

You do not need to force academic phrases into everyday answers. Choose combinations that fit the topic and the situation.

Do you enjoy your work or studies?

BASIC

Yes, I like my studies because I can learn useful things and I think they will help me get a good job later.

MORE NATURAL RANGE

Yes, quite a lot. My course gives me a chance to develop practical skills and gain experience that should be useful when I start looking for a full-time job.

HOW TO MAKE THEM ACTIVE

Do not memorise 100 collocations in one sitting

1. Notice the phrase

When you read or listen, record the full combination—not the isolated word.

2. Learn one example

Keep one natural sentence so you understand the meaning and grammar around it.

3. Adapt it

Use the same phrase with two or three different IELTS topics.

4. Retrieve it under pressure

Use it in a timed paragraph or spoken answer without looking at your notes.

QUICK COLLOCATION CHECK

Which combination sounds more natural?

1. Make a decision or do a decision?

Make a decision.
Learn “decision” together with the verbs it commonly takes.

2. Strong rain or heavy rain?

3. Make progress or do progress?

Make progress.

4. Raise awareness of an issue or raise awareness for an issue?

Raise awareness of an issue
is the standard combination in this context.

5. Does using more collocations automatically give you Band 7?

No.
Lexical Resource also considers range, precision, appropriacy, paraphrasing and the overall accuracy of your vocabulary choices.

FINAL PRINCIPLE

Do not try to sound “advanced”.
Try to sound accurate, natural and precise.

IELTS Collocations FAQ

Are collocations important for IELTS Band 7?

Yes. Awareness of collocation appears in the Band 7 Lexical Resource descriptors for both Writing and Speaking. However, collocations are one part of the criterion, not a shortcut to Band 7.

How many collocations should I memorise for IELTS?

There is no useful magic number. A smaller set that you can use accurately and flexibly is more valuable than a long list you cannot retrieve naturally.

Should I use academic collocations in IELTS Speaking?

Only when they fit the topic and context. Spoken English should still sound natural. Everyday collocations such as “gain experience”, “make progress” or “meet a deadline” can be more appropriate than highly formal phrases.

Can wrong collocations reduce my Lexical Resource score?

They can contribute to lexical inaccuracy or inappropriacy. The effect depends on how often the errors occur and whether they affect clarity.
