TEF Canada Expression écrite (Writing): Develop Strong Section B Arguments

Expression écrite (Writing) • Section B

Develop Stronger Section B Arguments

You reach 200 words, but your paragraphs repeat the same opinion without adding real support. Stronger writing does not come from adding more connectors or longer introductions. It comes from turning each idea into a clear reason, a concrete example, and a meaningful result.

Simple English guidance • arguments, exemples et développement en français

01

Je répète la même idée

Different words, same argument

Your paragraph becomes longer, but the reader still receives only one undeveloped claim.

02

Je manque d’exemples

Your support stays vague

You say an idea is useful or important without showing who benefits, how, or in what situation.

03

J’atteins 200 mots, mais…

Word count without development

Generic introductions, repeated conclusions, and memorised phrases create length—not argument quality.

Réponse rapide • Answer in 20 seconds

Build each argument in four moves

A developed Section B paragraph should do more than state an opinion. Use the Ross IPER Chain: present one distinct idea, explain why it is true, illustrate it with a concrete example, and show the result or significance.

Exemple rapide en français

« Les transports publics gratuits faciliteraient l’accès à l’emploi. En effet, certaines personnes refusent des postes éloignés parce que les déplacements coûtent trop cher. Par exemple, un jeune salarié qui économise 150 dollars par mois pourrait accepter un emploi dans une autre partie de la ville. Ainsi, cette mesure favoriserait une plus grande mobilité professionnelle. »

The paragraph does not repeat “free transport is good.” It moves from a claim to a reason, then to a realistic person and a clear consequence.

I

Idée

Make one clear claim

State a specific benefit, problem, effect, or principle connected directly to the topic.

P

Pourquoi

Explain the reason

Show the mechanism: why does this happen, and why should the reader accept the claim?

E

Exemple

Make the idea concrete

Use a believable person, workplace, family, school, city, cost, or everyday situation.

R

Résultat

Show why it matters

Connect the example back to your position through a consequence, benefit, risk, or solution.

Ross diagnosis: If removing two sentences does not remove any new information from your paragraph, those sentences are probably repetition rather than development.

B

Does Section B have to be a formal letter?

No. Official preparation guidance explains that Section B is primarily an argumentation task and does not require a complete formal-letter layout. A short opening is enough. Long generic introductions, conclusions, or official-style headers do not replace developed personal arguments.

What official guidance says evaluators consider

Pertinence
Does the response address the actual statement and communicate relevant information?
Qualité des arguments
Are the ideas developed through details and useful illustrations?
Cohérence
Does the position remain logical and consistent from beginning to end?
Cohésion
Do sentences and paragraphs connect through accurate logical relationships?
Phrases et vocabulaire
Are language choices varied, correct, precise, and suitable for the topic?
Orthographe et ponctuation
Are spelling, accents, sentence boundaries, and punctuation controlled?

Important: 200 words is a minimum requirement, not proof of strong development. A longer response can still be weak if it repeats one idea, ignores the topic, or fills space with generic language.

Diagnostic • Find the real Writing problem

Why your arguments stay short

A

You cannot generate two distinct ideas

Your priority is an argument-angle bank: cost, access, time, quality, health, environment, equality, and practicality.

B

You have ideas but each paragraph is three lines

Your priority is the IPER Chain. The problem is development, not idea generation.

C

Your answer sounds memorised

Your priority is replacing generic phrases with topic-specific nouns, examples, and consequences.

D

You can develop at home but not in 35 minutes

Your priority is faster planning, controlled paragraph goals, and a short final review routine.

Méthode IPER • Develop one paragraph

Turn one idea into a real argument

Weak paragraph

« Le télétravail est une bonne idée parce qu’il est pratique. Il est utile pour les employés et il peut améliorer leur vie. C’est donc une mesure positive. »

Why it stays weak: bonne idée, pratique, utile, and positive repeat the same evaluation. The paragraph never explains the mechanism or gives evidence.

Developed with IPER

« Le télétravail peut améliorer l’équilibre entre la vie professionnelle et la vie personnelle. En effet, les salariés réduisent le temps consacré aux déplacements et peuvent mieux organiser certaines responsabilités familiales. Par exemple, un parent qui économise deux heures de transport peut accompagner son enfant à une activité sans quitter son travail plus tôt. Ainsi, une organisation flexible peut réduire le stress tout en maintenant la productivité. »

Why it works: the paragraph gives one claim, explains how the benefit appears, illustrates it with a specific parent, and links the example to a broader result.

Idée
Cette mesure réduirait les inégalités d’accès.
One specific claim—not a general “c’est bien.”
Pourquoi
En effet, les frais actuels excluent certains ménages.
Explain the cause, mechanism, or reason.
Exemple
Par exemple, une famille avec deux enfants pourrait…
Make the argument visible through a concrete case.
Résultat
Ainsi, davantage de personnes auraient accès à…
Show the consequence and reconnect to the position.

Plan de 35 minutes • A practical routine

Plan before you expand

3–4 min • Plan

  • Reformulate the statement.
  • Choose a clear position.
  • Select two genuinely different arguments.
  • Add one example to each argument.

26–28 min • Write

  • Keep the opening short and topic-specific.
  • Develop each main paragraph with IPER.
  • Add a brief nuance only when it strengthens the position.
  • Finish with a consistent conclusion.

3–5 min • Review

  • Confirm the response exceeds 200 words.
  • Check agreements, verb forms, accents, and punctuation.
  • Remove repeated phrases.
  • Confirm each argument contains an example or useful detail.

This timing split is a Ross French Academy practice strategy, not an official mandatory allocation. Test it under timed conditions and adjust it to your writing speed.

A safe structure—not a compulsory official template

1

Short opening

Reference the statement and give a clear position in two or three sentences.

2

Argument 1

Use IPER to develop your strongest reason with a concrete example.

3

Argument 2

Choose a different angle and develop it through the same four moves.

4

Optional nuance

Acknowledge a real limitation only if you can answer it without weakening your position.

5

Short conclusion

Restate the final position without introducing a new argument.

A concession is not an official requirement. Use one because it creates useful nuance—not because a memorised template tells you every answer must contain certes… cependant….

Sujet TEF-style original

« Le télétravail devrait devenir obligatoire trois jours par semaine dans toutes les entreprises. »

The response below disagrees with a universal rule while recognising that remote work can still be beneficial.

1

Qualified position

The writer rejects one compulsory rule without rejecting remote work completely.

2

Distinct arguments

Paragraph one focuses on different job requirements; paragraph two focuses on employee circumstances.

3

Concrete illustrations

The examples use actual job types, customer service, transport time, space, and internet access.

4

Controlled nuance

The concession is brief and answered immediately, so the final position remains clear.

Mini-entraînement • Develop the idea

Turn three claims into IPER paragraphs

Before revealing the model direction, write one reason, one concrete example, and one result for each claim.

1. Transports gratuits

« Les transports publics devraient être gratuits dans toutes les grandes villes. »

Voir une piste IPER
Idée: improve access to work.
Pourquoi: transport costs limit job choices.
Exemple: a low-income worker refuses a distant position.
Résultat: free transport increases professional mobility.

2. Téléphones à l’école

« Les téléphones portables devraient être interdits pendant toute la journée scolaire. »

Voir une piste IPER
Idée: reduce distraction during lessons.
Pourquoi: notifications divide attention.
Exemple: a student repeatedly checks messages during an explanation.
Résultat: controlled use can improve concentration and participation.

3. Semaine de quatre jours

« Toutes les entreprises devraient adopter la semaine de quatre jours. »

Voir une piste IPER
Idée: reduce fatigue in suitable sectors.
Pourquoi: longer recovery can improve focus.
Exemple: a team completing the same workload with fewer interruptions.
Résultat: productivity may rise when workload and staffing are redesigned carefully.

Journal de développement • Review your paragraphs

Track what is missing

Problem What it looks like Correction question
Repeated claim C’est utile, positif et avantageux. What new reason does the second sentence add?
Reason repeats the claim C’est pratique parce que cela facilite la vie. How exactly does it make life easier?
Vague example Par exemple, beaucoup de personnes en bénéficient. Which person, situation, cost, place, or result can I show?
No result The paragraph stops after the example. What does this example prove about my position?
Fast self-check: underline the claim once, the explanation twice, the example with a box, and the result with a circle. A paragraph missing one part needs development.

Stop guessing what your writing needs

The Ross French Academy Expression écrite course teaches separate strategies for Sections A and B, task analysis, argument development, grammar, vocabulary, model answers, timed practice, and self-review. If you already write regularly but cannot identify why your arguments stay weak, personalised correction shows exactly where development, coherence, vocabulary, or grammar is limiting the response.

Questions fréquentes • FAQ

Expression écrite Section B FAQ

How long is TEF Canada Expression écrite Section B?
Section B lasts 35 minutes. You must express and justify a viewpoint in at least 200 words.
Does Section B have to be written as a formal letter?
No. Official preparation guidance explains that a complete formal-letter layout is not required. A simple opening is enough; the main objective is to present and justify a viewpoint.
How many arguments should I write?
The official format does not prescribe a fixed number. As a Ross practice strategy, two distinct and fully developed arguments are safer than several short, repetitive ideas.
Is a concession required?
No official rule requires one. Add a concession only when you can acknowledge a genuine limitation and answer it clearly without weakening your position.
Do examples need to be real statistics?
No research is available during the test. Use plausible everyday illustrations that make your argument precise and easy to understand. Do not invent complicated statistics you cannot express accurately.
Do long introductions improve the score?
Official preparation guidance advises against long generic introductions and conclusions that could fit every topic. Use that time and word count to develop your personal arguments.
How is TEF Canada Writing evaluated?
The written production is assessed by two independent trained evaluators using standardised criteria that consider communication, organisation, vocabulary, grammar, and other aspects of written performance.
Can I use a dictionary during the test?
No. Official test-day instructions do not allow a dictionary or other reference material during the computer-based test.
Are the model answer and practice topics official TEF questions?
No. They are original Ross French Academy TEF-style learning materials, not official questions, official answers, or past exam papers.
